It's not relevant. White schools can't teach us to act in the best interest of our own people. We either learn it at our mother's knees or not at all. I don't want to sound harsh but Jamaican parents are too inclined to spout platitudes than to address the realities of racism. I sat my son down quite early and gently explained certain realities to him making it clear that if someone has a problem with his colour they are silly people to be laughed at. It is THEIR problem not his. At age 10 I explained that one day some of his White friends may not want to hang out with him anymore. He cried but when it happened, he was prepared.

OPHR and the actions of Smith and Carlos were a terrific slap in the face to the hypocrisy at the heart of the Olympics. However, there was a deep flaw mirrored in other aspects of the New Left and the Black Power movement in that women were largely shut out. Many of the calls were about reclaiming manhood, as if African-American women weren’t victims of racism or couldn’t be a strong voice against it.

The foolishness of this move was quickly seen because many women athletes were major voices of solidarity after the fact. The anchor of the women’s gold medal wining 4×100 team, Wyomia Tyus said, “I’d like to say that we dedicate our relay win to John Carlos and Tommy Smith.”
It was a watershed moment of resistance. But Carlos and Smith are not merely creatures of nostalgia. As we build resistance today to war, theirs is a living history we should celebrate

As Tommy Smith said recently of his frozen moment, “It’s not something I can lay on my shelf and forget about. My heart and soul are still on that team, and I still believe everything we were trying to fight for in 1968 has not been resolved and will be part of our future.

I am NOT agreeing with RichD. RichD much as I love him is <span style="text-decoration: line-through">completely pretending to miss</span> missing my point. I am saying the argument that attending these prestigious White schools will turn Black students into White minded individuals is flawed. It is much more likely that they will face so much trauma and rejection from their White peers that it will have the OPPOSITE effect. It won't work any more than the Canadian Government's efforts to turn children from First Nations communities into good little White children.

Let me put it another way, even some Jamaicans who tink dem white develop a case of Black pride and activism after having a rude awakening on some of these campuses. This is not something I am going to debate. If people don't realize this by now....mi sorry fi onoo pickney when racism lick dem. That's the scariest part about Jamaican parents in denial about these matters. </div></div>
They did and still do it eith the indigenous students , they do it with white students.
They do it with immigrant students, why would they not do it with black students?
Just as the operators of casinos don't build them for the benefit of the patrons education systems are not estsblished and maintained for the benefits of none but the controlling sect in every society

What I thought happened was that the yanki olymic / athletic association wanted to strip them but the olympic commitie did not..

I also believe that ironical that Jesse Owens did not totaly support the fist...I thought he was brought in by the Olympic committe to cool down the tension.. But his quote:

The interesting thing that is not often noted is the third fellow on the podium was in support of the action... He wore a badge supporting the John Carlos organisation... Peter Norman, who told them to split the glove pair as one used a right hand the other a left hand....


On another note, John Carlos was of Caribbean origins.. Cuban... ans since so many yardies went cuba a chance he has some Jamaican..

Before you get so nasty.....I do more research and provide more independent sources for my posts than 99% of boardites.

There is such a thing as settlements and reinstatements. The stripping of the medals was<span style="font-weight: bold"> <span style="font-size: 14pt">WIDELY and I mean WIDELY reported at the time</span></span>. If it had not happened, surely this would have been picked up by the press. <span style="font-weight: bold"><span style="font-size: 17pt">No one and I mean NO ONE contradicted thi</span>s</span>, not the athletes, the International Olympic Committee or whatever Team USA was called back them

I suspect that perhaps there was some process by which an agreement or settlement was reached. The price of settlements is <span style="font-weight: bold">silence</span>...trust me, I know this from experience whether we are talking about Human Rights cases or legal settlements. Can't prove it but that is what I suspect and I am not going to waste my day researching this. I can tell you for a fact and I repeat.

Mr Carlos suggests just the opposite of what you are suggesting..he says the rumour of the stripping was put out to intimidate other athletes from taking similar action.

does that sound like somebody who has been silenced?
